11th grade Advisory for October 28
As this was mid-trimester for students, we took the time to check in with students about academic progress. We started the class off with a free write. Students took the time to write about how they did on their progress reports and share any feelings they had about it. How could they do better? What were they proud of? What goals do they have for next trimester? After the free write students volunteered to share. This prompted a discussion about how students can be successful in school.
With the remaining time we built community within our advisory. As I was still new to them and they were new to me, we played a game called Partner Pairing to get to know each other better. This is how the game is played:
Students pair up with another student they normally don’t hang out with. Each student asks their partner 4 mundane questions, e.g. favorite colors, least favorite class, what you would be doing if you weren’t in school, the highlight of your summer, your favorite food, etc. Each student then introduces their partner to the advisory, including their answer to the question(s). Each set of partner comes up with one question to ask the advisor. Must be school appropriate.
This went very well as students had fun introducing their partners to the advisory. They also enjoyed asking me questions. I believe it built community within our advisory and it helped me to learn all of their names at the same time.
