At our school the main goal of advisory is to keep students on the path to receiving a diploma. The the first advisory consisted of laying out the foundation of how to accomplish that. This included:
We also discussed academic honesty to our advisory students, the consequences, basic rules of the school, bullying and sexual harassment, and attendance and tardies. My advisory class is grade 11, so this was mostly a refresher to start students off the right way. This was also a day to bond with students and in my case, get to know them.
Advisory is a time to give information to students about what is going on in school. It is also meant as a place where the advisor and the advisees bond. There are many times when we do activities to focus on the students and the teacher relationships. We also discuss important issues, such as gender and racial bias, transgender norms, diversity, social justice, healthy relationships, and more.
